In creative arts, students discover a variety of art forms through a study of dance, drama, music and visual arts.
Studying the creative arts, students learn to appreciate, compose, listen, make and perform. Each art form has its own unique knowledge and skills, elements or concepts as well as a capacity to inspire and enrich lives.
Students must study 100 hours of both music and visual arts during Years 7 to 10. They also have an opportunity to further develop their knowledge and skills in other art forms through elective subjects including drama, dance, photography and visual design. Students can then select from a range of courses in Years 11 to 12.
Design and visual arts
Each year our students design and produce the school's year book using industry standard graphic design programs. Through the application of contemporary design principles the boys produce a high quality publication.
Students interested in photography can also join the school's photography club. Keen photographers can also apply to be one of the school photographers who capture a photo library of day to day life at the school.
Creative and performing arts
Our Creative and Performing Arts program offers the opportunity to participate in over 13 musical and drama ensembles incorporating over 150 students, some with North Sydney Girls High School. A highlight of the school year is the musical production combined with North Sydney Girls.
The boys display their talents in annual musicales, productions, exhibitions, concerts and participation in theatre sports, with many of our bands performing locally, nationally and internationally.
The Department of Education offers an impressive program of concerts, workshops, camps, ensembles and other performances and we encourage our boys to participate in these, enhancing their knowledge and performance experience.
Public speaking, debating and mock trial
North Sydney Boys has a long standing tradition of success in public speaking, debating and Mock Trial. Weekly debating workshops are offered supporting our numerous debating teams and a public speaking club with North Sydney Girls High School runs every week. Our teachers work closely with students keen to develop their public speaking and presentation skills.
Mock Trial, run by the Law Society of NSW, is offered to year 10 and 11 students. This popular program gives students the opportunity to develop teamwork, communication and problem solving skills whilst gaining a detailed knowledge of the judicial system. The boys are trained and mentored by teachers and old boys.
