The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award is a globally recognised program. Participants build their skills to equip them for life and work. The opportunities provided can play a critical role in their development. Within the program students aged 14 and over, are empowered to explore their full potential through activities that help them become highly skilled and disciplined individuals.
The award has three levels: Bronze, Silver, and Gold, each becoming progressively more difficult. Participants complete four sections for each level of the award.
- Voluntary Service – Participants provide services to others to become well-integrated members of the community.
- Skill – Participants can develop their existing skills in an activity or learn an entirely new skill that could be useful in the future.
- Physical Recreation – Participants are challenged to improve their physical health and fitness by playing a sport,
- Adventurous Journeys – Each level contains two adventurous journeys, one being a ‘practice’, before the second ‘qualifying’ journey, where students explore various landscapes and appreciate the environment while learning skills such as navigation, camp craft, teamwork, and resilience. As part of the journey participants must complete their level’s required number of purposeful activities like hiking, camping and swimming.
In year 9, students will have the opportunity to enrol in the Duke of Ed Bronze award, through an external provider. In our outdoor education program, students have the option to complete the adventurous journey as part of the year 9 camp.
In year 10 and 11, students have the option of enrolling in the Duke of Ed Silver and Gold Award respectively. North Sydney Boys High School acts as the Awards Centre for these levels. Students will have the opportunity to participate in a camp organised through the school to complete the adventurous journey component.
